I am doing research about a crew from the 303rd Bomb Group. Unfortunately, most are dead, and the only one that I have been able to contact says that his 10-man crew was put together in Alexandria, LA.
Could this have been possible? I know that Claiborne had a gunnery school, but was there a base in Alexandria that had crew flight training?

Thank you for your reply which is very important to my research.

Dear sir ..in all due reespect I was a POW in Germany for 495 days I was flying and shot down..I fell with the dead bomber for 23000 feet . I was given minimum medical treatment and no red cross food. I went without red cross food and proper medical attention for over 8 months while held in one room in a Labor Camp. As a res;ult of my Prison Camp days i am presently 100% total and permanently
disabled...I am not speaking of the award presented EX-POW's I am in a Wheel Chair. I also retired from the ARMY after serving my Country for 2 more wars. I am retired from the US ASrmy and so proud of it. But my dear Mr Gould I do not agree with your overall statistics. I seem to have fallen through the cracks! Read my book Wings And Barb Wire which is in print. You may find it newly published at this web site. www.1stbooks.com
or call toll free 1-888-280-7715
The proper medical treatment and Red Cross food were not where I was.

Does anyone know my dear dad,John C. LaRock, dob, 5-22-25, nickname,Rocky? He seved in the army, WW11, and talked about the families he lived with in Belgium, England, and France, but nothing more. Would love to hear from anyone who knew him so I could document something special for my kids and grandchildren. He was the greatest husband and father God ever sent to earth, and passed away in Jan. 1986. Being a kind and gentle man, it surprised me as a teenager when he'd get VERY upset that our teachers didn't emphasize the importance of D-Day and other special events. My Dad served in Company K, 335th Infantry, 84th Division. His name was Leon Griffith from Hartselle, Alabama. He passed away in Nov. 1985. He was a D.A.V., his feet and legs froze during the war. He refused to talk about the war very much so I know very little. If anyone remembers him or anything about his unit, I would appreciate any information. I loved this man very much, he was and always will be my HERO. God Bless everyone who served in W.W.II and thier families.

I was a l0 year old boy living in Heerlen Holland at the time of the liberation. I "sure enough": have something to be thankful for. I bet a lot of railsplitters remember Heerlen (they pronounced it hurleen) it was a rest center back then. I befriended a lot of GI's (no wonder, they had the 4 -c's (chocolate, chewing gum, candy, and cigs). There was a theater in Heerlen at the time the Hollandia it was called which showed movies to soldiers only. I befriended the projectionist, rember his name., Donald Sack he was a member of special services which was commanded by a maj White, the redcross girl that worked in his office, oh how beautiful she was. Yes even a l0 year old could see that.
Tried to buy her some perfume, was too embarrassed so I asked a teenage boy who past buy. I am still waiting for him to bring the stuff to me. Marlene Dietrich, an unknown celebrity to a l0 year old (although also pretty). A G.I. promised me "this box of chocolates" if you will just go over to her and give her a kiss from me. Hey, a box of chocolate for doing something pleasurable. Of course. She took my helmet cap, I did not want her to have it. Wonder if I would have been that selfish l0 years later??? Great memories from meeting great guys. Proof of that. I have been living in this country 45 years, retired from the Nat-
ional Guard, serving as a volunteer in the Georgia State Defense Force as its State Command SGt Maj. (after all these years the infatuation with the GI's still has not worn off. Congratulations on this great website.

My grandfather was an ammunition handler in the 39th regiment of the 9th Infantry Division.
He was wounded 13 October 1944 prior (I think)to the battle of Aachen. Any information on this unit, anyone who remembers him, or details of this unit during WWII would be most helpful.
Thanks.

My brother 2nd Lt. James Clyde Slavens, 309th Engr. Comb. Bat, Company "C", 3rd Platoon, died in Linnich Germany on 2/23/45 at the Crossing of the Roer River. I have spent almost 2 yrs. researching his steps through Europe. I have discovered that about Nov. 4, 1944 a young 13 or 14 year old French boy stowed-away on a truck west of Paris and was not discovered until they were well to the east of Paris. This young man's name was "Victor." I don't know if it was his first name or last name. He stayed with the company until the war ended when he could safely be returned to his family. If there is anyone out there who recognizes this story and could provide additional information I would like to hear from you.

Although Uncle Henry is not on this earth now, you brought him back to me in my thoughts and memories. Thank you.

I'm writing this for my cousin, Nicholas Cirillo, who gave me permission to see if I could find any of the people he served with, or information about them. Nick enlisted in the Army March 25, 1941 and was discharged Nov.25, 1945. He entered the war on June 6, 1944 at Normandy (Utah Beach) as a Technical Sergeant in the 2nd Platoon of Company F, 12th Inf., 4th Inf. Div. Many of the men he served with are buried over there. Among them: Captain Phineas Henry, Captain Warren Clark and Lieutenant Collins. 1st SGT Ginder, he thinks was killed, but maybe not. Also uncertain is what became of SGT Peckham and SGT Chiles. Charles Giacappelli of Company L was on line with Company F. Any info about him would be welcome, too. After Nick had gotten wounded for a second time, he didn't return to his old company. That's why he is unsure of the fate of some of his buddies. Hopefully, some of them survived, and maybe some of them will find this posting. May God bless all of the Heroes.

About two months ago a reader kindly forwarded to me, in response to a message, information regarding the American Battle Monuments Commission. Through his help, I was able to locate the place of burial of a good friend of my father's, who died at Anzio. I was also able to send a small amount of money to have flowers placed on his grave, and a photo taken of the cross marker with the soldier's name, battalion, and date of death, and the flowers. It came in color in a very nice folder.
Unfortunately, I can't recall the e-mail of the gentleman who helped me. If you are reading this and are him, thank you so very much.

AND KNOWING THAT THE 84TH COULD HAVE BEEN IN BERLIN IN HOURS WITHOUT THE GERMANS PUTTING UP A FIGHT "MAYBE SOME CRAZYS" AS HE WOULD SAY......HIS COMMENTS I FIND NOW AS OTHERS DID WERE MOSTLY HUMOROUS. THIS ONE IN PARTICULAR......ONE DAY SGT. PENKER "WILLIE" CAME UP TO HIM AND SAID POINTING GO OVER ABOUT 1/4 MILE THERE ARE SOME M.P'S WITH PW'S TAKE THE SQUAD, 7. IN TOTAL. MAKE SURE THERE IS ONE OF YOU AT THE END OF THE COLUMN....MY FATHER STARTED OUT AT A REGULAR MARCHING PACE, AFTER ABOUT 1/2 HR. THE SO-CALLED GERMAN OFFICER SIDED UP TO MY FATHER, AND ASKED BITTE,LT, CAN WE STOP FOR A MINUTE MY MEN ARE EXHAUSTED, MANY ILL WITH DISEASE. MY FATHER ANSWERED "CORPORAL." HE SIGNALED A HALT AND TOOK THEM OFF THE ROAD INTO THE DRAINAGE DITCH,,HE REACHED UNDER HIS RAINCOAT, AND WITHDREW A PACK OF CIGARETTES, LIT ONE LOOKED AT THE GERMAN AND OFFERED HIM ONE.HE TOOK ONE DRAG MAYBE 2 AND PASSED TO THE MEN BEHIND HIM. MY FATHER WAS IMPRESSED, THAT HE GAVE THE OFFICER THE REMAINDER OF THE PACK AFTER SHOUTING OUT ORDERS HE PASSED THE PACK BACK, AND KEPT SAYING DANKE ,DANKE.....MY FATHER WAS 20 THAT APRIL 45

NOW ALL THESE YEARS WE WERE TOLD BY DAD THAT UP COMING REPLACEMRNTS AND NEWS PEOPLE WERE SHOUTING AND SHOOTING PHOTO OF THE MARCH......WE WERE UNLUCKY UNTIL NOW IN FINDING A PHOTO CAN WE GET HELP? My dad, Leland J. Gorshe (from Des Moines, IA), served with the 168th Infantry regiment of the 34th 'Red Bull' Infantry Division. He was captured between Tunis and Bizerte in North Africa and then sent to a POW camp in Italy. Prior to this, he served with the 1st British Commandoes Regiment. My cousin taped an interview with him two years ago of his experiences. He passed away shortly after that. Next month I am meeting with a buddy of his (Charles King from Minnesota) to hear his stories so they are not lost. My heart is filled with pride in having known these good and heroic men. Is there anyone out there who may have known, or has a father or grandfather, who served in the same area? Maybe we could share some stories.....

I am researching my uncle's time in the service with the 82nd ABN, 504th. Fred Hallabrin (AKA: Itz, Fearless Freddie, and Fingerless Fearless Freddie--related to an incident at Fort Benning GA while in training.) He was a POW for about two years. He spoke German fluently and because of it, saved his life and the lives of the men captured with him--Sicily 1943. The story goes like this: When the Germans took him and the others prisoner, the Germans asked if anyone spoke German. My uncle did not speak up but waited to see what the Germans had in mind. The German in command said, "No prisoners, shoot them." My uncle spoke up and told them that according the Geneva Convention they could not do that, that they had to take him (my uncle & the others)prisoner. Amazingly the Germans did as my uncle said. I know that the family would send him all the cigarettes they could collect so that he could take them, sneak out of the prison camp, and use them to barter for food--for himself and others. Because he could speak German, he make friends with some of the guards and they would look the other way. He, of cocurse, was able to converse with the Germans outside the camp as well. I don't want to give the impression that his life as a POW was easy. I'm trying to keep this down to a "short" book. I don't know where he was held as a POW. I'm guessing Germany because of the language thing. There is a website that gives POW camp reports, but I would have to nail down the exact camp. If anyone has any other info or leads, I would be extremely grateful. My uncle was killed in an auto accident in 1955. He was from Mansfield OH. I know there is no way I can show my gratitude to all these men who are my heroes but would like to pass as much on to my grandchildren and the rest of the family about their sacrifice.

My late father, Leo G. "Mike" Griffin was asssigned to the XXIX TAC, Det. B which was in Maastricht, Holland at the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge. There was no time to evacuate the HQ's records, etc. and Dad (and maybe others) stayed behind to blow the HQ if the Germans got to Maastricht. Dad would've been put into the underground by a Dutchman named Jan Worst had it come to that. I would appreciate any information about events in Maastricht at that time.

I interviewed a German WWII Veteran who was wounded three times, and captured by an African-American soldier at the Elbe River. He was first stationed outside of Berlin as an Anti-aircraftman. He then helped recapture a town from the Russians, and was wounded twice. He was then restationed to a Railroad Artillery Unit. As the Russians pushed them to the Elbe River, he was again wounded. He then swam across the Elbe River where he was captured and spent six months in an American P.O.W. Camp. Finally, he was liberated in 1946. His story should be heard also!

My Dad Oliver L McGhee was in the 84th Inf Div, 327th FA Bn.
I have recently finished retyping a history of his artillery battalion with permission from its author. I have scanned in a few of the original pictures but don't have near as many as I would like. If anyone out there has pictures of Camp Howze, TX - Camp Claiborne, LA or a picture of Ft Hamilton with the message "Welcome Home, Well Done" and have the ability to scan them I would love to have a copy. Also if anyone served in the 327th FA Bn or had a relative that did I would like to here from you.

The 327th FA Bn was a medium artillery battalion (155mm howitzers) and was made up of three batteries A,B,and C each with 4 howitzer sections and 5th section to haul ammunition. their prime movers were M-5 high-speed tractors. My dad was T5 Oliver L McGhee and was a prime mover driver in the 1st section of Battery B. The history is a tribute to Battery B it takes them from training in 1942 through occupation in 1946. my dad never talked about his time in the war and this history has answered a lot of questions but also has brought on more questions. I plan to contact members of his battery and see what I can learn.
Let me hear from anyone who may be interested.
Ed McGhee
